Reflection Blog #7 Chapter 26

1. What information surprised you or was new to you in this chapter? Hows does this information connect to info in the main course text? Some information that surprised me about this chapter was how firm it came off to not say "good job" too much to my students.  I've heard it before but the approach it had was a little more strict that I was expecting.  I can see this book and the text connecting and working together because you have to understand your students' culture and how they would like to be complimented and what you should say too.   2. What information do you agree with and why? What info do you disagree with and why? I did agree mostly with the content because saying "good job" can definitely lose its meaning if you say it too much because the child might not even comprehend why you are praising them and what for.  There wasn't any information that I disagreed with in the reading, however, just like I mentioned before, it just came off a litt...

Chapters 18 & 20 1. What information surprised you or was new to you in this chapter? Hows does this information connect to info in the main course text? In Chapter 20, it talks about how teaching the children that the process rather than the grade or result are most important.  That surprised me because it's an unspoken rule of thumb, or at least for me it was, that the grade is the reflection of what you learned which is more important than anything else.  If you get a bad grade, that means you didn't learn anything.  It relates to the chapter 12 in the text because in the book by Pica, it talks about who should be leading the learning.  If the teachers are leading the learning then, chances are, it's more grades focused, but if the class was more student led then, it wouldn't be so focused on grades and more what the student learned. 2. What information do you agree with and why? What info do you disagree with and why? I agre...

1. What information surprised you or was new to you in this chapter? Hows does this information connect to info in the main course text? It really surprised me and was kind of a wake-up call to me how often I tell my girl students "I like your hair today!" or "what a pretty dress you have on!"  The reading in the book connects with the reading in the text because it talks about the development of identity in children.  Both readings  talk about gender identity and their role in culture. 2. What information do you agree with and why? What info do you disagree with and why? I agree with the reading because it's important to let girls know that yes they're pretty but being intelligent is important too.  I don't agree with sort of downplaying the comments about their looks,  outfit or hair.  It should be more of equal importance with that and intelligence because girls are always going to care about wh...

1. What information surprised you or was new to you in this chapter? Hows does this information connect to info in the main course text? In these two chapters, nothing surprised me but it just reiterated what I already knew which was that each child is different.  It connects  with the main text because they both talk about how children are different and being bias towards them. 2. What information do you agree with and why? What info do you disagree with and why? I agree when it talks about if we force children to learn then they won't like it because the stress hormone shuts off the part of the brain that helps focus, understand ideas, and commit to remembering information.  I have seen this first hand with my boys.  When they get overwhelmed, they shut down and sometimes cry which means their brains can't take any new information because it's too stressed out.  There wasn't any information I disagreed with because having my own children plus going into the te...
