Reflection Blog #4
1. What information surprised you or was new to you in this chapter? Hows does this information connect to info in the main course text?
In these two chapters, nothing surprised me but it just reiterated what I already knew which was that each child is different. It connects with the main text because they both talk about how children are different and being bias towards them.
2. What information do you agree with and why? What info do you disagree with and why?
I agree when it talks about if we force children to learn then they won't like it because the stress hormone shuts off the part of the brain that helps focus, understand ideas, and commit to remembering information. I have seen this first hand with my boys. When they get overwhelmed, they shut down and sometimes cry which means their brains can't take any new information because it's too stressed out. There wasn't any information I disagreed with because having my own children plus going into the teaching field, I've seen similar things happen.
3. Describe an experience you have had that relates to the information in this reading.
Like I explained in number two, I have seen children get stressed out and shut down. It's frustrating for everyone involved especially if there is a deadline for whatever is being worked on. I can see and understand these cues from my boys so then we take a break whereas my husband just makes them more upset because he doesn't understand them at all let alone child development.
4. How can you use this information in your personal or work/school life?
I can use this information not only in my personal life at home with my school age boys, but also at work. We have had some instances where a child becomes very irritable doing their schoolwork and it's frustrating because they have to get their work done for the independent study, but they are too stressed out to do so. I need to be patient with them and try it again later.
5. Rate this chapter on a scale of 1 to 5 and explain your rating (1 = low and 5 = high).
I would rate the reading at a 5 because it was pretty informative and it backed up what I already knew about the subjects at hand.
Thanks for this post!
