Reflection Blog #5
1. What information surprised you or was new to you in this chapter? Hows does this information connect to info in the main course text?
It really surprised me and was kind of a wake-up call to me how often I tell my girl students "I like your hair today!" or "what a pretty dress you have on!" The reading in the book connects with the reading in the text because it talks about the development of identity in children. Both readings talk about gender identity and their role in culture.
2. What information do you agree with and why? What info do you disagree with and why?
I agree with the reading because it's important to let girls know that yes they're pretty but being intelligent is important too. I don't agree with sort of downplaying the comments about their looks, outfit or hair. It should be more of equal importance with that and intelligence because girls are always going to care about what they look like no matter what.
3. Describe an experience you have had that relates to the information in this reading.
An experience I've had is having career day in high school and listening to women speakers motivate us to be anything we want to be. We are more than just a pretty face and can do hard things which is what the book talks about too.
4. How can you use this information in your personal or work/school life?
I can use the part when it was talking about having a little girl read their favorite book or tell you about their favorite book because it isn't looks related. It would make them feel smart and happy too. I can implement this into the little girls in my class.
5. Rate this chapter on a scale of 1 to 5 and explain your rating (1 = low and 5 = high).
I would rate this as a 5 because I thought it was a good refresher to tell girls they are intelligent rather than just pretty or adorable.
Thanks for the reply!
