REFLECTION BLOG #10-Chapters 12 & 17
1. What information surprised you or was new to you in this chapter? Hows does this information connect to info in the main course text?
The information that surprised me was in Chapter 17, the author reflects a little bit about how many things have changed since 125 years ago. We don't really think about what has changed until we reflect. It's mind boggling to think how different things will be in the next 125 years. The kids we are raising right now will have even more advances than we do right now. From the main text, I could see how it relates to the readings in the Pica book because it talks about developing the teacher's identity. In the Pica book, it touches on in Chapter 12 how some teachers give their children more movement time even though it can be looked down upon from the administration.
2. What information do you agree with and why? What info do you disagree with and why?
I agree with the information that says that movement is important for little kids instead of sitting in a desk all day working on academics. I liked the statistic that talks about how much students retain from movement activities rather than sitting in a desk and being forced to learn it for academic reasons then forgetting it. That was interesting to me. There wasn't any information that I disagreed with at all.
3. Describe an experience you have had that relates to the information in this reading.
I can relate this information to toddlers in my class last year learning the song Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes. If we were to just sing it, they wouldn't really retain where each body part but mores memorize the song because of repetition.
4. How can you use this information in your personal or work/school life?
I can use this information at home right now with my kids distance learning especially with my 4th grader. He is a very busy boy and doesn't do well with the lectures his teacher gives. He gets distracted and then rebels because he's not interested. I could look at his assignments and maybe may a game or activity out of things he's learning so he retains the information better.
5. Rate this chapter on a scale of 1 to 5 and explain your rating (1 = low and 5 = high).
I rate these chapters as a 5. Not only is it helpful in my professional life as a preschool teacher but it's also beneficial information because I am a mom with elementary school age kids. I take information I learn and try to implement it in my home.
Thank you Jamie!
