1. What information surprised you or was new to you in this chapter? Hows does this information connect to info in the main course text?

In chapter 9 of the Pica book, it mentions that some 5 and 6 year year olds got suspended for playing cops and robbers at recess.  That surprised me because kids are just using their imaginations at this age and rarely think of it as being aggressive. It connects with the course text because it talks about anti-bias in the classroom.  It's important to be anti-bias in a classroom and when you watch children play.  If you jump to conclusions because you think children are playing in a bad and unsafe way, but really they are just using their imagination, then that makes you look not good.

2. What information do you agree with and why? What info do you disagree with and why?

I agree that children should be free to use their imagination.  I disagree that the children should have been suspended for just pretending.

3. Describe an experience you have had that relates to the information in this reading.

Right before everything shut down in March, my son who was in kindergarten at the time, took a whistle tool thing that he got at a Cub Scouts banquet to school.  The whistle tool had a sharp cutting edge on it.  He thought it was the coolest thing and showed his friends.  One of the playground attendants took it from him then the office secretary called to tell me that they took it and I had to come get it.  I was just annoyed because he wasn't threatening anyone with it, but just an innocent 6 year old showing it off to his friend.  I wasn't very happy with the staff at the school for judging a situation wrongly.

4. How can you use this information in your personal or work/school life?

I can use this information when I am a teacher so I won't prejudge a situation before I find out the facts.  That just makes people more upset when they might get in trouble for something so innocent.  I can try to be more understanding and not jump to conclusions.

5. Rate this chapter on a scale of 1 to 5 and explain your rating (1 = low and 5 = high).  

I would rate these chapters probably a 4.  The reason I didn't give it a 5 is because the information wasn't as interesting or useful to me as previous chapters were.

Reflection #3: Question: Explain the benefits that come when educators maintain a child's home language. How does this practice uphold the principles of developmentally-appropriate practice? When an  educator uses the same language as the child's language at home, it helps the child feel included and wanted.  Also, the child might feel nervous if they are going to a new school where the primary language isn't the one spoken at home so it would be comforting to the student if the educator used the language most familiar to him or her.  Using this practice would offer the teachers a chance to check and make sure the student is understanding whatever is being taught.  Everyone would benefit because not only is the student learning but so is the teacher which would make it a developmentally appropriate practice for everyone.  They are building that connection which is very important.

Chapter 20: 1. What information surprised you or was new to you in this chapter? Hows does this information connect to info in the main course text? All of the information in this chapter is information that I have already heard about before.  Honestly, I didn't see any connection from the text to the chapter in the Pica book. 2. What information do you agree with and why? What info do you disagree with and why? I agree with the  information that we should let the students not win sometimes.  It really is true that kids will think they fail if they don't come in 1st place.  I also agree that people with a growth mindset value their hard work.  There wasn't any information that I disagreed with.  3. Reflection #1: Question: What motivated you to take this class? What do you hope to learn from this course? How will taking this course help you in your present day situation? I was motivated to take this class not only because it's required for my Associate's Degree, but also because I think it's an important class to take right now.  There is so much diversity in the world and it's vital to not be bias to one opinion while teaching students even if they come from a different background. I hope to learn how to be more open-minded when it comes to others having different beliefs or ideas than me.  Sometimes I tend to be so focused on my ideas that I forget that others have different ones than me. Taking this course will help me as a preschool teacher to be understanding to the children who are in my care and also to the parents too if they have specific instructions about the child that I'm not used to.
